Strengths: Possesses tremendous acceleration and versatility when at his best, enabling him to move in and out of potential trouble spots from any post position. Proven commodity at the highest levels in races at the Classic’s distance, witnessed by his Kentucky Derby victory. Owns a brilliance of which most horses can only dream, and can win a dogfight if challenged.
Weaknesses: Defeated Grade 2-level older horses in the Monmouth Stakes, so the jury is still out whether he can tackle the elite older horses at this level. Troublesome feet and complete lack of experience on any synthetic surface are two variables that handicappers simply won’t be able to know in advance of his Classic bid.
In the Genes: His third dam, Syrian Circle, is a half to Hidden Lake, Champion older female in 1997.
Status: First horse since 1915 to win the Derby after only three lifetime starts, and only the second winner in history to break from post position 20 ... After a win in the Preakness, his Triple Crown bid was thwarted by Da'Tara, the longest shot on the board. Big Brown never seemed comfortable in the race and was eased through the stretch ... In May, it was announced that Big Brown would stand at Three Chimneys Farm upon the conclusion of his racing career.
Bet You Didn't Know: The name Big Brown comes from the United Parcel Service company nickname; owner Paul Pompa's trucking business has U.P.S. for a client.
