Tuscan Evening takes Las Palmas
By Thoroughbred Times
Grade 2 winner Tuscan Evening (Ire) benefited from a well-timed ride by jockey Rafael Bejarano to score a comfortable win in the $200,000 Las Palmas Handicap (G2) on Friday at the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita Park.
The 4-year-old Oasis Dream (GB) filly took command in early stretch and held off Grade 3 winner Closeout by 1¼ lengths in the final race on Oak Tree’s Friday card, which featured the first six races of the two-day Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

| Race Comments: TUSCAN EVENING (IRE) stalked the pace off the rail, bid alongside a rival leaving the second turn, took the lead into the stretch, inched away under some left handed urging, kicked clear and held. CLOSEOUT chased inside then a bit off the rail, went between horses on the second turn and into the stretch, split rivals in deep stretch and edged a foe for the place. CAT BY THE TALE saved ground chasing the pace, came out into the stretch, was three deep in late stretch and was edged for second. QUIET MEADOW three deep into the first turn, chased outside or alongside a rival, came three wide into the stretch and was outfinished. CAPTAIN'S LOVER (SAF) settled inside chasing the pace, came out some past midstretch, split horses in deep stretch and also was outfinished. TEAMGEIST (ARG) angled in and chased inside, went outside a rival on the second turn and four wide into the stretch and could not summon the necessary late kick. ZARDANA (BRZ) pulled between horses then stalked outside a rival, drifted four wide into the stretch and weakened. BAHAMA MAMA (IRE) sped to the early lead, set the pace inside, fought back on the second turn and into the stretch and weakened in the final furlong. EXQUISITE (NZ) broke a bit slowly, pulled her way along outside chasing the pace, came three deep into the stretch and did not rally. TIZAQUEENA four wide into the first turn, chased outside then three deep, came three wide into the stretch and weakened. ROYAL TAAT (NZ) angled in on the first turn and settled inside, came out into the stretch and lacked the necessary response. MEYDAN PRINCESS (IRE) unhurried and angled in outside a rival early, settled off the rail, came out four wide into the stretch and was not a threat. INTERNALLYFLAWLESS angled in and settled just off the inside to the stretch and failed to menace. BEL AIR SIZZLE broke a bit slowly, settled off the pace inside, came out leaving the second turn and into the stretch and was not a factor. |
