Turf Sprint redemption for California Flag
By Marty McGee
Daily Racing Form, November 07, 2009
Turning what had seemed to be a deep and complex race into something entirely different, California Flag flaunted his superior speed Saturday in completely dominating the second running of the $909,000 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita.
Twenty-year-old jockey Joe Talamo was able to get California Flag to settle into a smooth tempo in the run down the hill of the 6 1/2-furlong turf course, and after crossing the main track for the homestretch with an open lead, the 5-year-old gelding just cruised from there, prevailing by 1 3/4 lengths over Gotta Have Her.

| Race Comments: CALIFORNIA FLAG sped to the early lead, angled in after the right hand curve and set the pace inside, kicked away under left handed urging in the stretch and held on gamely. GOTTA HAVE HER settled between horses chasing the pace, came out into the stretch, waited off heels nearing midstretch and lacked room behind foes past the eighth pole then rallied between rivals to gain the place. CANNONBALL in tight between horses early, chased between foes then off the inside, came out four wide into the stretch, angled out again in upper stretch and just got the show. DELTA STORM chased outside then alongside a rival, came out three deep into the stretch and was edged for a minor award between foes late. CANADIAN BALLET broke inward, had speed outside the winner then stalked off the rail to the stretch, drifted out some in the final furlong and weakened. SILVER TIMBER was in a good position stalking the pace inside, steadied slightly in a bit tight in upper stretch, continued along the rail and could not offer the necessary response. NOBLE COURT broke slowly, settled off the pace inside, continued along the rail in the stretch and improved position. EL GATO MALO chased outside, went three deep on the hill and five wide into the stretch and lacked the needed rally. GET FUNKY broke in a bit, was between horses early, stalked outside a rival then three deep down the hill and into the stretch and weakened. SQUARE EDDIE well placed tracking the winner between horses to the stretch, also weakened. DIAMONDRELLA (GB) squeezed some at the start, pulled between horses then angled in on the hill, split horses leaving the hill, came three deep into the stretch and lacked the necessary late kick. LORD SHANAKILL a bit slow to begin, settled inside chasing the pace, came out some in the lane and weakened. DESERT CODE broke alertly then dropped back outside, angled to the inside on the hill, came out approaching the main track crossing and again in upper stretch and could not summon the needed rally. STRIKE THE DEAL broke a bit awkwardly and a bit slowly, pulled early, steadied at the right hand curve, angled in outside a rival, came out leaving the hill and four wide into the stretch and was not a threat. Rail on hill at zero. |
