FMS: Informed Decision foils Ventura
By David Grening
Daily Racing Form, November 06, 2009
Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard hit for the cycle Friday at Santa Anita, where the 68-year-old started three runners in the Breeders' Cup, and saved the best for last.
Informed Decision took advantage of a perfect trip to win the $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, Sheppard's first victory Friday after Forever Together finished third in the Filly and Mare Turf, and Cloudy's Knight finished second in the Marathon.
Julien Leparoux, who earlier won the Juvenile Fillies with She Be Wild, gave Informed Decision ($8.80) a perfect ride and the result was 1 1/4-length win over 2008 Filly and Mare Sprint winner Ventura.

| Race Comments: INFORMED DECISION pressed the pace in hand from outside along the backstretch, launched a bid leaving the turn, surged to the front in upper stretch, opened a clear advantage in midstretch then turned back VENTURA under intermittent right hand urging in the late stages. VENTURA raced in hand while well back on the backstretch, closed the gap after angling to the outside leaving the turn, swung five wide at the quarter pole then closed steadily in the middle of the track but couldn't catch the winner while clearly best of the others. FREE FLYING SOUL set the pace under pressure inside the winner for a half, maintained a slim advantage on the turn, battled after the relinquishing the lead to the winner in upper stretch and continued on willingly to gain a share. SARA LOUISE steadied slightly while under a firm hold at the half mile pole, angled out for room on the turn and lacked a strong closing response. ONLY GREEN (IRE) checked after breaking slowly, was outrun along the inside, steadied briefly on the turn and rallied mildly. SILVER SWALLOW chased four wide for five furlongs and lacked the needed response when called upon. EVITA ARGENTINA trailed for a half, circled six wide at the quarter pole and failed to mount a serious rally. SEVENTH STREET stalked three wide for a half, raced just off the pace from outside on the turn and gave way in upper stretch. GAME FACE raced in good position between horses, raced within striking distance to the turn and gave way steadily thereafter. |
