Midday takes inside route in F&M Turf
By Steve Andersen
Daily Racing Form, November 06, 2009
A few weeks ago, trainer Henry Cecil scolded himself for the way he prepared Midday for the Group 1 Prix de l'Opera at Longchamp in early October. She finished third, and at the time, Cecil said the filly had been slightly unprepared following a layoff and would be better in her next start.
Boy, was he right.
Making her first start outside of Europe, Midday ($6.60) rallied along the inside in the stretch to win Friday's $1,818,000 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita.

| Race Comments: MIDDAY (GB) pulled a bit while being angled to the inside on the hill, stalked inside, moved up along the fence on the backstretch, continued inside on the second turn, bid along the rail in the stretch, gained the lead past the eighth pole, kicked clear under urging and held gamely. PURE CLAN allowed to settle outside a rival then just off the rail, came out some into the stretch, split rivals in midstretch then rallied along the inside for the place. FOREVER TOGETHER in a bit tight on the hill, chased inside, came out some on the second turn and into the stretch and just got the show outside foes on the line. VISIT (GB) pulled her way to the early lead inside, dueled on the first turn, inched away again on the backstretch and second turn, came out some into the stretch, battled outside the winner in midstretch, could not match either of the top pair in the final furlong and just lost third. MAGICAL FANTASY settled just off the rail then outside a rival, came out leaving the second turn and four wide into the stretch and just missed a minor award between horses late. MARAM four wide on the hill, angled in and stalked outside a rival then a bit off the fence, came out three deep into the stretch, was between horses in the drive and could not summon the necessary late kick. RUTHERIENNE pulled her way between horses then stalked just off the rail, went three deep leaving the second turn and into the stretch and lacked the needed response. DYNAFORCE three deep early, prompted the pace outside VISIT then stalked just off the rail, was between horses leaving the second turn and weakened. |
