There’s more to horse racing than a poofy dress and a big old hat. Those who frequent equestrian centers for sport rely on some pretty fantastic-looking shoes and clothes for optimum horseback riding.
Long before they became trendy, riding boots were a wardrobe staple for those who enjoyed the sport. Bally’s black-and-brown boots have been around for quite some time, and today that style has been copied by everyone from Tory Burch to Steve Madden.
In fact, Hunter Boots currently has a style on sale at Saks reminiscent of the traditional riding boot.

Attention must also be paid to Ralph Lauren, whose business celebrates the elegance of equestrian style. They add horsebit detail to many of their accessories, including boots, belts and purses.
Now, to the jodhpurs! Leggings seem to be a current trend, but there’s nothing like a good-fitting pair of jodhpurs to help you gear up for a day of riding (or a day of shopping. Take your pick).
For those of us, ahem, who won’t be jumping on the horse’s back, but still want to give a nod to our inner equestrian, may I suggest J.Crew’s “pixie” jodhpur pant? The inner leg leather panels get the message across without being too “I just stepped off the horse and smell a bit like manure.”

For an even jauntier look, go for Ralph Lauren Blue Label’s Hudson Stretch Twill Jodhpur. PS – they’re on sale. The earth tan is a bit too bold for those of us afraid of lighter colored leggings, but throw an oversized button-down or boyfriend shirt so you can cover up what shouldn’t be seen.

Speaking of tops – what to wear? My suggestions are items that allow you to move: cable-knit sweaters, comfy and flattering half-zips, classic-fitting tees. Save the button-downs and blazers for eventing. Otherwise you’ll really feel like a fat guy in a little suit.
Gap’s Dolman-style sweater is roomy enough to cover up the bum (unless you are fit as a fiddle, in which case…good for you) and gives you the space you need to hop atop that horse without any trouble, or fight for that mall parking spot.

And nothing says sporty better than a ponytail. Hell, throw a ribbon in there for good measure.
Have you got all that? Are you in head-to-toe fanciful equestrian gear? Do us a solid and send pictures of yourself to @ABRLive, because we’re dying to know if our good advice paid off.
