Out of the Gate with ... Conrad Bandoroff

Conrad Bandoroff, whose family owns and operates Denali Stud in Lexington, Ky., is a full-time student at Sewanee: The University of the South and an ardent horse racing fan. When he’s not attending classes, Bandoroff can be found working part-time for Bradley Thoroughbreds as well as Gainesway Farm.

Name: Conrad Bandoroff

What I do for a living: Full-time student at Sewanee: The University of the South

How and when I was introduced to Thoroughbred racing: The Thoroughbred industry is in my blood. My family owns and operates Denali Stud, a commercial breeding farm.

My favorite racetrack: Keeneland, but I love Saratoga as well.

My favorite Thoroughbred racing event: Breeders’ Cup. I think that the Breeders’ Cup really shows what this sport is capable of achieving and should continue to be a springboard into the industry’s future.

Other sports/teams I follow: Arsenal FC and University of Kentucky basketball

What I would like to see more of in Thoroughbred racing: More involvement from my generation. This is an amazing sport and it has something to offer to every person out there. People have an innate attraction to horses and we need to build off that. As an industry, we need to market to my generation because we are the future of horse racing.

What I would like to see less of in Thoroughbred racing: Less stakes races. It is not good for the industry to run stakes that draw four to five horses. The bettors don’t like it, and it makes for boring races.

Three words that define what Thoroughbred racing means to me: Beauty, grace, speed

First Thoroughbred track I ever attended was: Keeneland

Favorite all-time Thoroughbred: Animal Kingdom: that horse has taken me to unimaginable places.

My personal best moment in the sport of Thoroughbred racing: Animal Kingdom winning the Dubai World Cup, because at that point I had developed a bond with the horse and I was able to share the moment with my father.

Best racetrack food can be found at: Keeneland: the bread pudding

My favorite jockey: Mike Smith – he’s all class

My favorite trainer: Bill Mott

My heroes: Winston Churchill and my father above all else

Person in Thoroughbred racing I’d like to have dinner with: John Magnier

My philosophy on life: Hard work pays off.

Favorite quote or motto: “Success is not final; failure is not fatal; it’s the courage to continue that counts.” - Winston Churchill

Favorite animal other than a horse: Dog

Favorite non-Thoroughbred racing sports event I have attended: Indy 500, but nothing comes close to horse racing

Favorite food: Steak

Favorite vacation spot: Skiing out West - it doesn’t matter where.

Favorite city: Lexington, Ky.

Favorite musician/band: The Avett Brothers

Favorite all-time movie(s): The Shawshank Redemption

Favorite TV Show: “Game of Thrones”

Favorite hotel: Meydan Hotel in Dubai

Websites I visit daily: The TDN, Paulick Report, Twitter, and ESPN

What I drive: Toyota 4Runner

Pet peeve: Laziness and tardiness

Favorite movie about horse racing: Seabiscuit

Which actor would play me in a movie: Ben Affleck

Alma Mater: Currently attend Sewanee: The University of the South

Best Book I recently read: “Killing Lincoln

Favorite memento: Rose from Animal Kingdom’s Kentucky Derby garland.

Favorite dessert: Vanilla ice cream with carmel sauce

Favorite drink: Budweiser long neck

What I like about my job: I currently intern at Bradley Thoroughbreds and work at Gainesway’s yearling division, and I love learning new aspects of the business and being able to spend time around horses.

Favorite Tech gadget: iPhone

Twitter Handle: @CBandoroff

People I follow on Twitter: Graham Motion, Michael Phelps, Bobby Flay, Brad Weisbord

No. 1 Bucket-List item: See a Triple Crown winner
