Name: Bonnie-Jill Laflin
What I do for a living: First and only female scout in the NBA (Lakers); sportscaster and philanthropist
How and when I was introduced to Thoroughbred racing: At an early age my dad owned racehorses, and now my father and I own horses together. It’s a huge passion of ours!
My favorite racetrack: Del Mar and then Saratoga
My favorite Thoroughbred racing event: What else: the Kentucky Derby!
Other sports/teams I follow: Well for the NFL, I’m a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader and San Francisco 49ers GoldRush Cheerleader, and of course the Lakers and I’m a die hard San Francisco Giants fan!
What I would like to see more of in Thoroughbred racing: A governing racing commission that is in charge of all the states that have racing. All decisions made would be mandatory in all states (a trainer/jockey suspended in one state could not race in another state). The commission would have guidelines regarding horses that can no longer race, including sending horses to retirement or rehabilitation farms so they can live a good life. Tracks and owners could contribute to this!
Three words that define what Thoroughbred racing means to me: Admiration (for horses), Excitement, and Passion
First Thoroughbred track I ever attended: Bay Meadows when I was just a baby and our horse was racing. I basically grew up on the backstretch.
Favorite all-time Thoroughbred: Zenyatta, since I saw her win many races in Southern California and was able to meet and spend some time with her. And the legendary Secretariat
My personal best moment in the sport of Thoroughbred racing: Little Miss Hollywood, who won her debut at Del Mar after I purchased her at the Barrett’s 2-year-olds in training sale
Best racetrack food can be found at: Del Mar
My favorite jockey: Bobby Gonzalez, one of the top jockeys for years in the Northern California circuit. He saw me grow up and rode many of our horses.
My favorite trainer: Doug Utley, who’s trained many of our horses in Northern California; also, Brian Koriner as a Southern California triainer.
My heroes: My father and of course all of our military, veterans and first responders! Thank you for your service!
