Kentucky native Brad Kelley formed his racing stable in the late 2000s. He also has been involved with breeding Thoroughbreds as a partner in Hurricane Hall. Kelley formed his Commonwealth Brands tobacco company in 1990 and sold the discount cigarettes company for $1 billion in 2001. He is invested in land, and reports say he owns 1.2 million acres in Texas, Florida and New Mexico. Kelley is an active wildlife conservationist, spending millions of dollars conserving such animals as black rhinos and white rhinos, pigmy hippos, okapi, impalas, white bearded wildebeests, gazelles and Eastern bongos. In 2011, he had 27 horses in training and 57 broodmares. Many of the horses in his racing stable are handled by Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, but others are with trainers Bob Hess Jr., Neil Howard, Jerry Quinn, and Larry Sterling Jr. in North America and with Dermot Weld in Ireland.

Heading Bluegrass Hall's 2013 campaign is Oxbow, a bay colt by Awesome Again. The colt was victorious in the LeComte Stakes (G3), and heads to Churchill for the 2013 Kentucky Derby.
