Bred: Mary A. Sullivan (KY)
Sire: Stormy Atlantic
Dam: Foolish Gal, by Kiri’s Clown
Get Stormy has accomplished all of his wins on the turf and the 6-year-old Stormy Atlantic horse out of the Kiri’s Clown mare Foolish Gal certainly was bred to love the grass. His broodmare sire, Kiri’s Clown, was a multiple graded stakes winner on the grass and set back-to-back course records in the 1994 and 1995 editions of the Grade 3 New Hampshire Sweepstakes before winning the Grade 1 Sword Dancer Stakes at Saratoga race Course. Get Stormy’s other grandsire, Storm Cat, was North America’s leading sire in 1999 and 2000.
Get Stormy, who bears the colors of his breeder, Mary Sullivan’s Sullimar Stable, is a late-bloomer who didn’t win a graded stakes until late in 2009. An earner of more than $1.5 million, Get Stormy can handle all kinds of course conditions but seems to do his best running on firmer turf. His 2011 campaign was sensational as he recorded back-to-back Grade 1 victories, winning the Maker’s Mark Mile at Keeneland and the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill Downs.
Trainer Tom Bush said he is mystified why Get Stormy has performed so poorly in the Breeders’ Cup (11th in the 2010 Mile and 12th in the 2011Mile) but is hoping that the horse will redeem himself in the 2012 edition.
