In winning Friday's Grade 3, $111,000 Ack Ack Handicap at Churchill Downs, Demarcation proved his class, as well as his versatility.

A dead-heat winner of last year's Grade 3 River City Handicap on turf at Churchill Downs, he moved to the dirt in the Ack Ack for the first time since February 2008, and the change in surface rejuvenated the 5-year-old Demarcation, who rallied from the back the pack at 10-1 to score a 1 1/2-length victory over 21-1 long shot Glamour Guy.

The win was his first of the year after not having finished better than third in six starts.

Winning trainer Paul McGee said he wanted to switch things up with Demarcation after an allowance race at Keeneland didn't fill for his horse, a 5-year-old gelding by Gulch. He noted the horse has won on Polytrack, turf and dirt.

"I'd say he's highly versatile," he said.

Jesus Castanon, his regular rider, gave Demarcation a smart ride, allowing him to settle well off the pace in seventh, as favored Riley Tucker set a contested pace of 45.73 seconds and 1:10.63 while hounded by Spotsgone in the one mile dirt race.

Glamour Guy, who raced in sixth early, made a bid to the lead in the stretch, but the strong-finishing Demarcation surged past him late.

Demarcation, owned by Amerman Racing, raced a mile in 1:36.15, paying $23.40.

Glamour Guy held second, a half-length in front of Spotsgone. Riley Tucker was fourth.
